Sensory Portraits
I create art that can be engaged with safely by individuals who have Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties.
A portrait normally presents someones appearance, however a 2D portrait holds less value in the sensory world.
So, I coined the idea of a Sensory Portrait, which captures how that individual interacts with the world around them.
These Sensory Portraits offer the child a chance for autonomy and creative engagement, all of which can benefit their well being.
If you are unfamiliar with our sensory systems, please refer to ‘Sensory Resources’ where I have provided information explaining the 8 Sensory Systems that I consider within my work.

‘Tactile Strings' created using a wooden ring, lace, satin cord, macrame rope & cord.

Designed to engage touch and proprioceptive senses.

'Reflections & Light' created using a plastic tub, holographic foil, fairy lights & sellotape.

Designed to engage vision.

'Colourful Reflections' created using a plastic tub, resin, wire & metallic cellophane.

Designed to engage visual and vestibular senses.
Their Sensory Story
Each individual’s interaction is documented. A small booklet is created to convey their experience using methods such as transcribing vocalisations into sheet music and creating poetry from observations. The booklets design incorporates an element from their Sensory Portrait.
